Exercise 1 - Center Text - Use Bold


Directions:

  1. Start a blank document in your word processor.
  2. Type the text below and press the Enter key twice.

  1. Select and center all the text.
  2. Select the title and bold it.
  3. Deselect the title.

Directions:

  1. Start a blank document.
  2. Type the text below, inserting a blank line between the title and the list of medal winners by pressing the Enter key twice after the title.

Exercise 3 - Center and Italicize Text


Directions:

  1. Open the NEWBERY document you created in exercise 27 if it is not already opened.
  2. Center the list of books and authors. (Use the Center alignment button on the Formatting toolbar.)
  3. Select and italicize the title of each book. (Use the Italicize button on the Formatting toolbar.)
  4. Save the document as NEWBERY2.
  5. Close the document.

Exercise 4 - Right-align, Bold & Underline Text


Directions:

  1. Create a new document.
  2. Type the letter below, inserting blank lines as shown.

  1. Use the Date feature to insert today's date.
    (To do so, click the Insert menu.
    Select the Field... option.
    In the Field names scroll box, click on Date.

    Click the OK button. The date should be inserted in the document.)
  2. Right-align the return address. (Use the Italicize button on the formatting toolbar.)
  3. Center the date. (Use the Center alignment button on the formatting toolbar.)
  4. Bold the name of the company Volcano Video Games, in the address.
  5. Underline the name of the game, Mountain Maze Adventure, in the first sentence of the letter.

  6. Save the document as VIDGAME.

  3. With the title still selected, bold it.
  4. Select and bold the WHAT: WHEN: and WHERE: headings.
  5. Select and underline the start and end times.
  6. Select, center, and italicize the RSVP line.
  7. Save the document as INVITE.
  8. Close the document

Exercise 6 - Change Line Spacing


Directions:

  1. Start a new blank document.
  2. Type the paragraphs below, using the Tab key to indent the first line of each paragraph.

The Empire State Building in New York City is one of the most famous buildings in the world. For a long time, it was also the tallest building with 102 stories. Completed ahead of schedule in 1931, it took only one year and 45 days (including Sundays and holidays) to build.
The Empire State Build has a fascinating history. over 90 movies have feature it. In 1945, a B-25 cargo plane crashed into it at the 79th floor. Thousands of people visit the viewing area at the top of the building every year.

  1. Immediately correct any mistakes using the Backspace key as you type.
  2. Change the spacing of the lines in both paragraphs to double. (To do so, highlight both paragraphs. Click the Format menu and choose Paragraph. In the Paragraph dialog window, click the Line Spacing drop down list arrow and choose Double. Click the OK button to close the dialog window.)
  3. Save the document as EMPIRE.
  4. Close the document.

Exercise 7 - Change Line Spacing - Part 2


Directions:

  1. Start a new blank document.
  2. Type the paragraphs below, using the Tab key to indent the first line of each paragraph.

Did you know that the first Thanksgiving was a three-day event of prayer and feasting in 1621? Imagine having a three-day party!
Americans celebrated the first national Thanksgiving Day on November 26, 1789. Much later, President Abraham Lincoln made it an annual holiday. He set the date so Thanksgiving would always be the last Thursday in November. And that's when we celebrate it today.

  1. Format the paragraphs so that a blank line comes before each paragraph. If your application doesn't have this feature, use the Enter key to add the blank lines.
  2. Save the document as THANKSG.
  3. Close the document.

Exercise 8 - Change Line Spacing - Part 3


Directions:

  1. Start a new blank document.
  2. Turn on the Caps Lock feature and type the title LIGHTNING and press the Enter key.
  3. Center and bold the title.
  4. Position the insertion point below the title and type the paragraphs below, using the Tab key to indent the first line of the first two paragraphs only.

Lightning is exciting and dangerous. Scientists estimate that lightning strikes the Earth 100 times each second. That means lightning is hitting us 8.6 million times per day!
Lightning is an electrical discharge and is five times hotter than the sun. If lightning is in an area, it will strike the best electrical conductor on the ground. This may or may not be the tallest object in that area.

Contact the local American Red Cross or another reliable source for information on how often lightning strikes in your area. The state of Florida has the highest incidence of lightning strikes in the United States.

  2. Change the line spacing to double for the title and introductory paragraphs.
  3. Indent the safety tips paragraphs one-half inch.
  4. Format the safety tips so there is a blank line between each using either the Format Paragraph feature or the Enter key.
  5. Save the document as LIGHTN.
  6. Close the document

Exercise 9 - Change Line Spacing


Directions:

  1. Start a new blank document.
  2. Type your name and press the Enter key.
  3. Insert today's date using the Insert Date command. (Click Field... from the Insert menu. Click Date in the Field Names scroll box and click the OK button.)
  4. Immediately correct any mistakes using the Backspace key as you type.
  5. Right-align your name and the date.
  6. Position the insertion point after the date and press Enter two times.
  7. Return the text to left alignment. Type the title Sarah, Plain and Tall and press the Enter key.
  8. Type A Book Report and press the Enter key twice.
  9. Center and bold both lines.
  10. Position the insertion point below the titles and make sure the text is left-aligned.
  11. Type the paragraphs below, using the Tab key to indent the first line of each paragraph.
  12. Italicize the title of the book, Sarah, Plain and Tall, in the first sentence.
  13. Select the text for the book report and change the line spacing to double.
  14. Save the document as SARAH.
  15. Keep the document open for the next exercise.

Sarah, Plain and Tall is a book by Patricia McLachlan. It won the Newbery medal in 1986. This book is about a family that lives in the Midwest. Caleb and Anna are the main characters. Their mother died when they were young. Their father places and ad for a wife in a newspaper. A lady named Sarah answers the ad and comes to live with the family.
Sarah is nice but she is from Maine and misses the sea. The family finds things to remind her of her home. A hay mound is like the sand dunes. The plains stretch out like the sea. They swim in the cow pond.
But Sarah still misses Maine and decides to go back. Caleb and Anna are afraid she will not return. But Sarah does come back. She adjusts to her new life. So do Anna and Caleb and Father. After a terrible hailstorm, they all help repair the damage. They become a family.


Exercise 10 - Set Margins, Change Line Spacing, Bold and Center Text


Directions:

  1. Open the file 036RPT1.DOC from your school's file server. (Or you can copy and paste from this document into a new blank document in Microsoft Word.)
  2. Change all margins to 1.25".
  3. Give this report a title. Position the insertion point before the first line.
  4. Turn the Caps Lock feature on and type REPTILES OF THE WORLD.
  5. Press Enter to move the paragraph to the next line.
  6. Center and bold the title REPTILES OF THE WORLD.
  7. Set line spacing to double for the entire document.
  8. Bold each of the reptile heading, starting with TUATARA and continuing with TURTLE, LIZARDS, SNAKES, and THE JAMAICAN BOA.
  9. Indent the first line of each paragraph 1/2".
  10. Remove any extra blank lines above and below each heading and between paragraphs.
  11. After making sure you've completed all steps, save the document as REPORT1.
  12. Print the document.
  13. Close the document.
